The All Points East (APE) Festival returns to Victoria Park this August bank holiday with chart-topping performances, funfair attractions, local artisan food and amazing opportunities for young people.

Festival organizers AEG Presents have once again teamed up with East London Arts & Music (ELAM) college, inviting students aged 16-19 to get involved in the world of festival planning and music making .

“As the future of the industry, we believe it’s extremely important to bring budding artists on board,” says Darcey Jackson, organizer of All Points East. “It’s a unique opportunity for them to launch their professional careers, showcase the variety of young talent around London and for us to learn from them what young people want to see happen at UK festivals. “

Learn from music professionals

College interns will follow music professionals behind the scenes, to find out what goes into putting on a show, including main stage setup, lighting engineering, sound technology , event management, production and marketing.

“A host of opportunities are available to those who wish to work in the music industry. It’s not just about knowing how to sing or play an instrument,” explains Darcey. “We offer a combination of part-time paid internships and job shadowing opportunities.

“Working alongside experienced people gives students invaluable insight and inspires them to think about their future and their goals.”

ELAM students who previously worked at All Points East continued to work full-time in the music business.

Katy Hall, Head of Industry Readiness at ELAM, says, “Our goal is to provide our students with industry-level experiences that they can then add to their education portfolio. Our collaboration with APE is the perfect place to learn and observe the best artists, real sound engineers, venue managers and festival organizers.

“They’ll learn valuable problem-solving skills in real-life, high-pressure situations and they’ll really be able to unleash their full potential.”

Participation in musical performances

Students will have the chance to perform at the festival over both weekends. In 2019, ELAM student Qbrick opened the main stage and later that day, fellow music student Izco, DJ’d in to entertain the crowds.

The week’s program, In The Neighborhood, will also feature live music performances and family activities.

“We take great pride in working with the local community to create the welcoming and warm atmosphere that All Points East is known and loved for,” says Darcey. “This is an incredible opportunity to showcase the excellent products of East London and its businesses, not to mention the top talent of its young residents.

“The close bond we share with ELAM is part of APE’s commitment to the local community. Few young artists have the opportunity to perform at this level and we are incredibly proud to help talented teenagers share their music and their passion with all in attendance.”

Katy adds, “Our partnership with All Points East is one of the most important relationships we have had. It’s amazing how aligned we are when it comes to creating opportunities for young people, and the festival organizers share the college’s values of representation in the creative industries.

“It’s our job to ensure that our students develop their skills, gain confidence and discover their voices, which is why we are so thrilled with this collaboration and honored to return to the festival again this year.”

Not to be missed: Women’s House

House of Women will perform on the East Stage as part of the main festival on August 25. The all-female rock band formed over a year ago and is made up of ELAM trainees and alumni. Members Kyla, Poppy, Kyrah, Betsy and Elsa have performed at Fiddlers Elbow, Off the Cuff, Trinity Art Gallery, Road Trip, Workshop and Open House. They also produced an original track for the college’s YouTube stream, ELAM Sessions.
