Jack White surprised fans — and, we’re guessing, his then-girlfriend, Olivia Jean — when he proposed onstage during his April 8 concert at Detroit’s Masonic Temple.
According to the ABC television affiliate W X Y Z, the proposal took place near the end of White’s set. The rocker was performing the White Stripes single “Hotel Yorba” in 2001 when he proposed to Jean, whose band had opened the show earlier that evening.
“Hotel Yorba” completed the initial set, but when White returned for the encore, Jean accompanied him. The pair were joined by White’s mother, Jean’s father and Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank, who officiated. The pair then married on stage, with their respective bass players serving as best man and bridesmaid.
The proposal and marriage capped off a 24-hour whirlwind for White. The rocker’s new album, fear of dawnwas also released on April 8, and earlier today the Detroit native delivered the National anthem on opening day for the Tigers.
While you’d traditionally expect social media to be ablaze with images of White’s engagement and wedding, the musician doesn’t allow cellphones at his shows. Still, that hasn’t stopped many White fans from sharing their congratulations (see below).
This is the third marriage of born musician John Gillis. From 1996 to 2000, he was married to fellow White Stripes teammate Meg White (he took her surname). Five years later, he married model and musician Karen Elson. The couple announced their split in 2011 and officially divorced in 2013.
