As the 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony draws closer, it looks like two of this year’s winners may not be in attendance.
Todd Rundgren and Belinda Carlisle, the Go-Go’s lead singer, have booked performances on October 30, the night of the ceremony. Carlisle’s concert is set to take place in Sheffield, England, and although Rundgren’s date is a little closer to home, his planned Cincinnati concert is still a four-hour drive from the venue in Cleveland where the ceremony is. induction will take place.
While neither artist has officially confirmed that they will skip the event, both have previously expressed skepticism about the venue.
âIt’s no secret that I don’t care,â said Rundgren Billboard shortly after the 2021 nominations were announced. “It doesn’t matter how many times they nominate me. It’s not going to make me care.”
Rundgren also decried the Hall as “an invention of the industry” and called the institution’s fan vote a “scam”. âTrue Halls of Fame are for retirees and the deceased because your legacy has been established,â he said. “I’m too busy working to care about my heritage.”
Likewise, Carlisle criticized the inner workings of the Hall, while suggesting that the Go-Go’s wait for dedication was due to some sort of grudge. âI don’t think I would show up now. I don’t do corporate stuff, âthe singer admitted to Yahoo in 2020. âI think it’s personal. I know for a fact that there are quite a few people who don’t like us on the panel, whoever they are. It is very good. You cannot deny what we have done. I am not saying this in an arrogant manner. I’m just stating facts.
Although Carlisle does not attend the induction ceremony, other members of the Go-Go seem likely to attend. In a 2021 interview with Sirius XM, the band members made it very clear their intentions to attend, with guitarist Jane Wiedlin admitting that she “cried until I peed my pants” when she discovered that they were going up. Carlisle did not participate in the interview. .
