Underground music Showcase has been a staple of the Colorado music scene for almost 20 years. Better known as UMS, the festival occupies South Broadway in Denver for a weekend and features many well-known artists from across the country as well as great acts from our beautiful state.
After being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UMS returns this weekend from August 27 to 29. Spanning a variety of places such as Hi-Dive, Denver HQ, Mutiny, Information Café, and The hornet outdoor stages in the car parks of Good will and Import mechanics, it will certainly be a good time filled with music and community.
Oakland, California Shannon and the clams will be happening on Friday, which excites me endlessly! They have a special mix of lo-fi surf and garage rock that will make you want to grab a malt on roller skates, dance and then get a sailor tattoo (in the best possible way). Shannon & The Clams have just released their new album, “Year of The Spider”, which was released on August 20th. They will also be joined that evening by headliners. Pine forest. This New Jersey band has a slow but steady approach to alternative indie rock with thoughtful lyricism accompanied by a tight rhythm section to deliver a concise ensemble of musical bliss.
The best part about the Underground Music Showcase is that it’s not just about the out of town headliners. This is very much about the great talent that we have here in Colorado. There is a full lineup of some of Colorado’s best. Some of my favorites include garage rock greats Bud Bronson and the good timers, cursed lords Green druid, rock noise center Moon Pussy, Colorado’s purveyors of pop art Princess ergot, independent rock from Rubedo and the epic two-drum pounding of the masters of postmetal Indigenous girls.
Colorado Springs also has some amazing artists performing at UMS this year. On Friday, complex independent rockers We are not a brooding lot will happen at The L. Saturday will feature hip hop led by a group of Audible To Tacos Cochino while Pout house will bring their garage power pop perfection to The hornet.
While attending a large festival as it is now can be a health concern, UMS organizers are thinking about everyone’s safety by requiring proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test within the past 24 hours. Masks are encouraged for indoor sites but not required.

If you still don’t feel like making the trip to Denver, there’s still a variety of shows this weekend here in Colorado Springs. Thursday August 26, Californian metalcore band Fabricate the conspiracy will play The Triple Nickel with Sorry plague, Fight the Phoenix, and Arctic origins. On Friday evening you can enjoy the soft, eclectic and original sounds of Joseph Lamar, My name is harriet, and Faerett To Fritzy’s. Friday will also be the night to see a unique and energetic set from the heavy metal mariachi band. Metalachi To The black sheep.
